Meet the Doctors

Rishi K. Agarwal, MD

Dr. Agarwal, a native of Alexandria, Louisiana, graduated Summa Cum Laude from Louisiana College with a Bachelor of Science (Biology and Chemistry) and a minor in English studies. He received his MD from Louisiana State University New Orleans School of Medicine. He completed his Internship and Residency at the University of Alabama-Birmingham in Internal Medicine and completed his Fellowship in Gastroenterology at Tulane University, in New Orleans.

His awards include the President Award of Excellence, Dean’s List and Merit Scholarship, 1999-2003. He was also awarded a National Cancer Institute Summer Fellowship and was an active member of the Aesculapian Society during his time at LSU. He has presented at national conferences, published in multiple journals, and is a member of the American College of Gastroenterology, American Gastroenterological Association, and the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. He has special interests in colon cancer screening and prevention.

Brent N. Barranco, MD

Brent N. Barranco, MD, joined Gastroenterology Associates, N.A., P.C. in July 2003 and practices at our Brookwood location. He obtained his undergraduate degree from Auburn University and his medical degree from Tulane University. His internship, residency and fellowship were all performed at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospitals. Dr. Barranco is board certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology.

Dr. Barranco is a member of the American College of Physicians, American College of Gastroenterology, American Gastroenterological Association, and the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy

Gregory L. Champion, MD

Gregory L. Champion, MD joined Gastroenterology Associates, N.A., P.C. in July 1994 and practices at our Brookwood location. He obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of Alabama and his medical degree from the University of South Alabama. He performed his internship, residency, and fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Dr. Champion is board certified in both Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology.

Dr. Champion is a member of the State Medical Association, American College of Gastroenterology, American Gastroenterological Association, American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, and the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America.

David M. Fettig, MD

Dr. Fettig graduated Summa Cum Laude from Florida State University with a Bachelor of Science and received his MD from the University of South Florida College of Medicine. He completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Alabama-Birmingham and additionally served as Chief Resident. He also completed his fellowship in Gastroenterology and his Liver Transplant Fellowship at the University of Alabama-Birmingham.

He was presented with the Arnold P. Gold Humanism in Medicine Award, Best Teaching Fellow Award, Best Teaching Faculty Award, Mayo Clinic Gastroenterology Board Review Scholarship Award, and the AASLD Transplant Fellow Grant Recipient, and is a member of the American College of Gastroenterology, American Gastroenterological Association, the American College of Physicians, and the American Association of the Study of Liver Diseases. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology.

William H. Halama, MD

William H. Halama, MD joined Gastroenterology Associates, N.A., P.C. in October 1999 and practices at our Brookwood location. Prior to this date, Dr. Halama was in practice with Gastrointestinal Medical Specialists of North Alabama, P.C. Dr. Halama obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of Alabama and his medical degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He performed his internship and residency at The Baptist Medical Centers in Birmingham, Alabama and his fellowship at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. Dr. Halama is board certified in both Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology.

Dr. Halama is a member of the State Medical Association, American College of Gastroenterology, and the American Gastroenterological Association.

David Landy, MD

Dr. Landy grew up in the suburbs of Atlanta. He earned a degree in Chemistry at Vanderbilt University. He attended medical school at Emory University in Atlanta, and received an M.D. degree in 1989.

Dr. Landy completed his Internal Medicine residency at Emory University. His Fellowship in Gastroenterology was completed at University of Florida Health Science Center in Jacksonville, Florida.

Dr. Landy has been with Alabama Gastro since 2000. He is board certified in Gastroenterology, and Dr. Landy is a member of the American Gastroenterology Association, American College of Gastroenterology, American Society of Gastroenterology Endoscopy, and MASA.

Dr. Landy serves on the board of directors of several community service organizations, including the local chapter of the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA). The Alabama chapter of the CCFA named Dr. Landy their “2007 Physician of the Year.”

Besides spending time with his wife, Randi, and daughter, Ellen, in his off-hours, Dr. Landy enjoys working in the yard, playing softball and tennis, and watching SEC football.

Raj Parikh, MD

Dr. Parikh earned a B.S. in Neural Sciences from New York University and obtained his M.D. from St. George’s University School of Medicine where he graduated in the Honors Society. He did his Internship and Residency training at the University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) where he also served as the Chief Medical Resident. He proceeded to complete his fellowship in Gastroenterology at UMDNJ. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. Dr. Parikh joined Birmingham Gastroenterology Associates in 2011.

Dr. Parikh practices at Brookwood Medical Center. His special interests include Endoscopic Ultrasound and Gastrointestinal Oncology. He plays a key part in the development of the Endoscopic Ultrasonagraphy program at Brookwood Medical Center. He has presented at numerous national conferences and is a member of the following societies: American College of Gastroenterology, American Gastroenterological Association & American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.

Lindsay South Robison, MD

Dr. Robison joined Gastroenterology Associates of N.A., P.C. in September 2011 to practice at our Brookwood locaton. She obtained her undergraduate degree from Washington and Lee University and her medical degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine. She performed her internship, residency, and gastroenterology fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospitals. She was the recipient of a 2010 GI Fellow’s Research Award in Inflammatory Bowel Disease to study family planning issues in patients with inflammatory bowel disease.

Dr. Robison is a member of the American College of Gastroenterology, the American Gastroenterological Association, and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.

Chris Shaver, MD

A native of Huntsville, Ala., Chris Shaver attended Birmingham-Southern College where he graduated cum laude with a B.S. in Biology. He was a scholarship athlete at BSC and was named a two-time academic all-american in basketball. Dr. Shaver received his medical degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine. He completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina. Advanced subspecialty training in gastroenterology was completed at the University of South Florida.

Dr. Shaver is board-certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology and is a member of the American Gastroenterological Society, American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, the American College of Gastroenterology, The Obesity Society , the Jefferson County Medical Society and the Medical Association of the State of Alabama.
